Beauticians - Why Volunteer?

If you’re a qualified beautician and can spare a few hours a month to help run our Workshops and Masterclasses, we’d love to talk to you about joining our team.

Quite simply, we couldn’t run our vital services without our dedicated team of volunteers.  Donating just a few hours of your time each month can make a real difference to women and teenagers that are living with cancer and struggling with the visible side effects.  Our volunteers often tell us that they love being able to use their skills in a really positive way.

When did you start volunteering for Look Good Feel Better?

I started volunteering 12 years ago, while working for Boots.  After reading an article in the Boots news I can remember saying to a colleague “wow, read this, I need to get involved!”

What’s the best thing about being a Look Good Feel Better volunteer?

I love everything about it; the people you meet, the way you make people smile, using my skills to help others, the conversation and of course, the make-up. The feeling you get at a workshop when the ladies start chatting and laughing is so satisfying. These ladies are struggling with the emotional and physical side effects of their cancer treatment, we can’t wave a magic wand, I wish we could, but we can give them advice on looking their best, lift their spirits, boost morale and build self-confidence.

Some of the ladies will say, ‘I haven’t picked up my children up from school, been to the shops or seen friends since I was diagnosed, but today I will.’  Which shows you what Look Good Feel better is all about.

One of my favourite moments:

Last year, after a wonderful afternoon at a LGFB workshop, an elderly gentlemen came into the room to pick up his wife, he couldn’t find her anywhere.  All of the volunteers all stopped what they were doing because we couldn’t understand why he couldn’t see her - she was standing right in from of him! He said with so much emotion in his voice, “I’ve got my wife back”
