Virtual Chair Tai Chi & Qigong Workshop

Duration: 1 hour
Frequency: Once a month
Cost: Free of charge

Who can attend the workshop?

Anyone with a cancer diagnosis from point of diagnosis and beyond.

IMPORTANT: it is recommended you do not attend a session until at least 12 weeks after an operation and, whilst the exercises covered are very gentle, please check with your nurse or consultant before booking that you are safe to do so. If you have a PICC line, please also check with your nurse or consultant before booking.

What can I expect from the workshop?

Jan Roberts, who runs the sessions, is a Beauty Therapist who is currently our Lead Volunteer in Milton Keynes, running our Skincare & Makeup Workshops in partnership with Macmillan. She is passionate about Tai Chi and has been teaching Tai Chi and Qigong for the past 15 years, having completed a six-year teacher training course run by the President of the British Council of Chinese Martial Arts.

Tai Chi is a martial art but these days it is practised for health and wellbeing. Although usually performed standing, it can still be very beneficial if performed whilst seated.

This is what we aim to cover:

  1. Helps to stimulate the circulation and meridians (energy channels within the body)
  2. Will help with waist and arm movement and stimulates those associated muscles
  3. Tai Chi is often referred to as as ‘meditation through movement’ and so whilst following these movements, it can distract you from everyday concerns
  4. Qigong is a set of relaxing breathing exercises that will stimulate and relax both the mind and body

Please be aware that there are a lot of arm movements during the session, but only one or two are above the shoulders. Alternatives are given but the arms are constantly in use throughout.

After the workshop you will receive a summary of the exercises for you to follow at home.

What do I need to bring to the workshop?

Just yourself in loose fitting clothing, which is easy to move in, and a comfortable chair preferably with no sides. You might also want to have some water handy in case you need it during the session.
